In Or Out: French Toast

French toast is a dish made of bread soaked in eggs and milk, then fried. Often enjoyed as a breakfast or brunch dish this meal is served both as a sweet and savoury variant.

Hello my lovely readers,

This was supposed to turn into a regular part of the blog but unfortunately, time has not been on my side. Thankfully the end of the year is near and that usually means festive sweets and treats. I was inspired by this post for one reason: Tasha’s Brioche French Toast. I also realised the distance of my bedroom to Tashas and decided to try my luck at making my own version of Tashas french toast to avoid travelling. Unfortunately I could not find Brioche French Toast so the taste is not 100% but I definitely had a lot of fun making it. Check the recipe below and see whether this was worth having in or out!

Based on the same one person variant let us begin the calculations!

1 loaf of bread = R11.99 for 18 slices = R0.66 per slice this recipe made 5 = R3.3
3 eggs = R16.95 for 6 large free range eggs, and therefore 1 egg = R2.82 so 3 = R8.46
1 cup milk = R19.99 for 2L so 250ml = R2.48
1 tsp vanilla essence = R8.50 for 40 ml = R1.01
2 tbsp sugar = R9.49 for 500g = R1.07
4 tbsp butter = R44.99 for 250g = R10.20
pinch of cinnamon
1 pack strawberries = R19..99 for 250 g

All ingredients purchased from Pick and Pay.

1.In a small bowl, combine, cinnamon and sugar and set aside briefly.
2. Whisk cinnamon mixture, eggs, milk, and vanilla and pour into hollow bowl (something good enough to dip your bread in).
3. Once you’ve dipped bread in the egg mixture heat a pan on medium heat. Fry the bread on each side on the pan till brown.
4. Drain a paper towel and serve with a spoon of mascarpone cream and some caramelised strawberries.
5. To caramelise strawberries add 1 tbsp sugar to a pan and add some strawberries. Allow to bubble on medium heat, stirring for 2 minutes before serving.

In all honesty nothing comes close to the Tashas french toast but these are a good second. I would definitely prefer to go to Tashas so this dish is best served OUT! I would however leave it up to you to decide because the price difference is quite significant.

All in all, try it and let me know what you think!
